Observations of Multiple Internal Wave Packets in a Tidal River Plume

چکیده
Remotely sensed images document the occurrence of multiple packets internal solitary waves (ISWs) in Rhine River plume at same time. We use a combination field observations, and non-hydrostatic hydrostatic modeling to understand processes that lead generation retention ISW within plume. Previous numerical shows tidal front is trapped mid-field for more than one cycle due straining recirculation plume, resulting presence fronts near-and regions. In this work, we show how variations strength these can release packets. conclude region modulation explain A frontal Froude number analysis generated during previous ebb tide ISWs addition newly released front.

Observations at the tidal plume front of a high-volume river outflow
[1] We present shipboard observations of very strong convergence, vertical velocities and mixing, and nearbed impacts associated with the leading-edge front of the tidally-pulsed Columbia River plume. With upwellingfavorable winds and riverflow of 4900 ms , the plume propagates as a buoyant gravity current with a rotary, borelike vertical frontal circulation and downwelling as strong as 0.35 m ...
متن کاملStructure and dynamics of the Columbia River tidal plume front
[1] Time‐dependent buoyant plumes form at the outflow of tidally dominated estuaries. When estuary discharge velocity exceeds plume internal wave speed c, a sharp front forms at the plume’s leading edge that expands from the time‐dependent source. Using observations of the Columbia River tidal plume from multiple tidal cycles we characterize time‐evolving plume structure and quantify front spee...
متن کاملObservations of internal wave packets propagating along‐shelf in northern Monterey Bay
[1] Internal waves of depression were observed propagating along‐shelf and into northern Monterey Bay, California (CA) on the inner shelf. These waves had amplitudes approximately equal to the thermocline depth (∼4 m), and were unstable to shear and mix the thermocline. Isopycnal gradient spectra showed that the wave packets lead to an elevated mean dissipation rate of " = 2.63 × 10 m s for up ...
متن کاملPropagation of internal wave packets in the thermocline
Internal wave packets propagating vertically in the oceanic thermocline are investigated with numerical simulations. For a typical set of environmental and packet parameters, it is shown that linear dispersion will have a significant effect on the spreading and decay in amplitude of these packets. Sufficiently strong packets are shown to generate turbulence that forms a continuous ‘scar’ of sma...
متن کاملEvidence for the inherent unsteadiness of a river plume: Satellite observations of the Niagara River discharge
We ; present satellite data from the Niagara River plume showing that a large eddy, or bulge, forms and grows in the plume near the mouth of the river. The plume consists of a semicircular bulge region immediately offshore of the mouth and a narrow current that propagates east along the shoreline. During the low-wind period from 27 to 29 May 1999, the width of the bulge more than doubled and th...
